Since the beginning of humanity – artists have tried to understand and subsequently explain our existence. We do this through art, literature, music, history, religion, language. Most important is the key to understanding ourselves. There is an order and a pattern to everything. All you have to do is know what to look for. The so-called firmaments that the Universe left for us to return to ourselves.

If there was only one thing I could communicate, what would it be? Which would be the most significant? Most useful?

the greatest gift you could offer anyone – even yourself, is presence. This can be done through concentration or attention. It is a bringing awareness to the present.
Sa fi Om is a set of illustrations that depict how I think we came to be present here, and now.
To be Human – Hand Bound Book
For the physical realization of the book, I chose to print the images on 170mm sheets of light cream paper. Rather than using white, the cream tone imbues the work with a sense of warmth and vitality. Its organic quality, reminiscent of unbleached paper, evokes the timeless character of a book crafted a century ago. The pages are constructed in the Japanese style, where printing appears on only one side of the sheet, which is then folded with the crease on the outer edge. This technique creates a refined, uncut edge that enhances the tactile and visual experience of the book.

Born in Timisoara and raised in Atlanta, Ga, Maria Michaela grew up around the world. She has a deep love for art and history and expresses herself through many creative formats. Amongst these are painting, drawing, illustration, and photography. She lives in Romania where she finished her MoFA in Advertising and Book Graphics. In her free time she reads and writes.
